About the MPS Worm Gear
The MPS Worm Gear (D5) is the worm wheel that runs against a worm screw on Van de Wiele MPS velvet looms. A worm drive gives a high reduction and turns the motion through a right angle; contact between screw and wheel is mostly sliding, so lubrication has a direct influence on the condition of the gear. Code D5 identifies the worm gear matched to the MPS model.
Wear typically shows as thinning tooth profiles, increasing play when direction changes and irregular movement in the mechanism the gear drives. Darkened oil, fine burrs on the teeth or a polished wear band on the contact face are all signals to replace it. Because the worm screw shares the same contact surface, inspect it at the same time.
