About the Gearbox Pinion Gear
The Gearbox Pinion Gear (D3) is the small drive gear in the velvet loom gearbox that turns its larger partner. Having fewer teeth than the gear it drives, each pinion tooth engages more often, which is why the pinion is usually the first gearbox part to show wear. Code D3 runs in the same housing as the upper group, distance and 27-31 gears in our catalogue; your loom model and a photo of the old pinion are normally all we need before ordering.
Sharpened tooth tips, a step worn into the tooth flank or play in the keyway all indicate it is time to replace it. A widened keyway often reveals itself as a light knock each time the loom starts. When the pinion is renewed, check the gear it meshes with and replace it too if necessary, for example the Gearbox 27-31 Gear.
