About the Drive Wheel Steel
The Drive Wheel Steel (K20) is the steel-bodied version of the wheel that drives the rapier on velvet looms. Its job matches the aluminium type: transfer the loom's rotation to the rapier so the weft can be inserted. Some mills choose steel because of their loom set-up or maintenance practice, and the type is usually decided by the part already fitted on the loom.
Signs for replacement include blunted or broken teeth, shiny wear bands on the wheel face, runout at the hub, or the rapier skipping on the wheel. A worn wheel can also damage the rapier surface, so inspect the rapier and the pressure roller when you change it. For a lighter option there is the Drive Wheel Aluminium.
