About the Weft Brake Leaf 0.25 mm
The Weft Brake Leaf 0,25 mm (A4) is the thin brake leaf the weft yarn passes over before reaching the rapier head, giving the yarn a controlled amount of tension. The 0,25 mm in the name is the catalogue thickness designation of the leaf. Correct weft tension stops the yarn from slackening and forming loops during insertion, and from being over-tensioned and breaking, so this small part has a direct effect on fabric quality on a velvet loom.
Over time the running yarn cuts a groove into the leaf surface or the leaf loses its springiness. Tension then becomes irregular and you see loose picks, loops or frequent weft breaks. A groove you can feel with a fingertip, or a nick on the edge, tells you the leaf is due for replacement. The other contact point on the weft path, the Weft Guide Rod, should be checked at the same time.
