About the Weft Gear
The Weft Gear (D9) is part of the weft-side waste take-up drive on velvet looms and is catalogued in the same family as our selvedge waste take-up gears. Pulling the cut weft ends away steadily keeps the cutter area clean and stops loose ends from being drawn back into the fabric. D9 is one of the transmission parts that keeps this movement continuous.
Once the weft gear wears, the waste yarn is pulled unevenly, fibre builds up around the cutter and weft tails may be left hanging at the fabric edge. Rounded tooth flanks or a broken tooth mean the gear should be replaced; accumulated yarn also puts extra strain on the cutter diamond.
